The pearly-white TOWIE look ‘could leave you toothless’
February 3, 2014
Fitting reality TV-star veneers means filing away healthy tooth enamel
Every time you get the veneers redone, more filing is needed
This could lead to filing healthy teeth down until they need replacing
TOWIE star Lauren Pope claims to ‘love’ her pearly-white teeth but a top dentist has warned such drastic cosmetic works could leave patients needing dentures by the time they’re 40.
Dr Mervyn Druian reveals that he twice turned down 30-year-old Lauren, after she came to him pleading for a full set of veneers.
‘Her teeth were perfect,’ he says. ‘I had to say no, as treatment would have been inappropriate.’
Veneers are fine, ceramic or plastic coatings that are bonded to the teeth to give a more uniform appearance – but fitting them involves filing away some healthy tooth enamel.
If done well, they can last 20 years or more, but poorly fitted veneers can easily dislodge and crack, meaning they must be replaced.
That involves more filing away of the healthy tooth.
‘Every time you have to redo them, you have to take away a little bit more of the underlying tooth,’ says Dr Druian.
The worry is that eventually the tooth can’t be filed down any further and will have to be completely replaced.
Dr Druian advises conservative treatment where possible. ‘For most patients, we’d give orthodontic treatment combined with whitening and one or two veneers,’ he says.
He claims the Made In Chelsea set – which includes his clients – are far better dental role models as reality stars go.
