What does orthodontic treatment involve?
Initially, we carry out a full orthodontic assessment, including a clinical examination, photographs, diagnosis and the types of dental braces available to you. We listen to your concerns and the dental issue you would like to correct so we can choose the best option for you.
Once fitted, your dental brace is fixed to your teeth for the whole of your treatment. It is made of small brackets which are glued to your teeth, with a wire running through them to move your teeth into their desired position. The wire is held into place with tiny elastic bands and will be changed at regular intervals during treatment.
How long does dental brace treatment take?
Fixed brace treatment usually takes around 12-18 months, but can occasionally be longer in more severe cases. Fixed braces are an ideal choice for straightening teeth, as your teeth can appear aesthetically enhanced within a few months of treatment. However, if the brace is removed too hastily, before your teeth have settled into their new positions, your teeth will revert to their previous crooked shape.
Following treatment, we recommend you wear a retainer at night to keep your teeth in their new straighter positions.

Keeping teeth healthy during treatment
As your brace is fixed into place, it can’t be removed for brushing. It is therefore very important to spend some extra time brushing all around your brace and between the gum line, using fluoride toothpaste. We have specially designed toothbrushes and mouthwashes that can help keep your teeth and brace clean. Brushing may take a little longer when you have a fixed brace, but failure to keep your teeth and brace clean could lead to permanent scarring on your teeth.
