What does the treatment involve?
The aim of a scale and polish is to prevent and treat gum disease and improve oral hygiene, whilst maintaining good gum, or periodontal, health.
The scale and polish will involve the use of hand or mechanical instruments to remove dental plaque and tartar. We initially examine your teeth, identifying any plaque deposits, bleeding gums or other potential problems. We also carry out a basic periodontal examination (BPE), a measurement of your gum health.
We use hand or piezon scalers to remove plaque deposits and tartar, and perform an interdental clean. We then polish your teeth using a fine diamond polishing paste to get them looking brilliantly shiny.
A scale and polish is essential to maintain a healthy smile and excellent periodontal health. The frequency of your treatments will depend on your individual oral health – some patients may attend every three months, whilst others can go six to twelve months between appointments.
