What is Pericoronitis?
Pericoronitis is inflammation and pain associated with the follicle around the wisdom tooth. It may be treated with cleaning and antibiotics but if re-infection occurs or swelling persists then there are various options available. Antibiotic use in wisdom teeth treat a symptom and not a problem, which is normally the tooth.
What can be done?
Operculum removal
This is a simple surgical procedure where the gum around the wisdom tooth is removed.
Wisdom tooth extraction
This is again a simple surgical procedure that is planned can be completed under local anaesthetic in surgery. The tooth may be removed in one or divided and removed. Coronectomy
This is a procedure where the crown of the wisdom tooth is removed – the roots remain. This procedure is normally completed with a full extraction runs the risk of nerve damage.
