Over the years, I’ve tried many different treatments and products and have listened to what my patients want and the one thing I always say is: ‘Remember, it’s not just about lines and wrinkles, but about the canvas of the skin.’

As practitioners, we can correct and improve a loss of volume and fill or relax wrinkles, but to attain good, clinically viable results, you need a good canvas to build on. I explain to patients that it’s a bit like painting a picture on two different canvases – one being a crumpled, old paper bag, the other being a fresh, clean canvas. I can provide the same treatments, but which version is going to look best? Of course it’ll be the beautiful white canvas they say. ‘Exactly’, I reply.

So let me get you to take a closer look at your skin. Skin is the largest organ in the body and is exposed to both intrinsic and extrinsic factors and is always on show. In my clinical experience, the answer for those seeking age perfecting solutions to reverse the signs of time, is lasers. Initially, people were certainly skeptical and confused over the difference between (non-professional) beauty lasers and medical lasers, but with the passage of time, plus efforts to educate the public, I believe that the value of laser treatments in Britain is finally beginning to be realised.

Let’s take IPL, a completely non-invasive procedure, created to erase red spots, sun damage and thread veins, all issues that we may face as our skin ages.  In just two to three visits, we can resolve these issues. However, when I speak to patients, they’ll often tell me: ‘I tried IPL, but it didn’t work and I didn’t see results’, not realising that the treatment they’ve paid just £40 or so for in a beauty salon is unlikely to have been given using top of the range machines.

A medical provider would supply Lynton, Alma and Syneron lasers; they are all in my list of top B machines and all produce results. I love options like ‘skin refresh’, six monthly IPL facials and ‘Forever Young’ – I love these effective treatments and so do the patients.

ith Erbium laser resurfacing, we step into the world of ablative treatments. Brilliant under eyes, this treatment can improve the texture and is ideal for creating smooth, primed skin. The problem is that it calls for a little down time and repeat sessions. However, in my clinical opinion it is no more painful than a dermaroller and gives superior, long lasting results.

Then we have CO2. This one is for the brave and can offer complete skin resurfacing. As I tell my patients, just like a plane would smooth down a piece of wood, CO2 will restore a smooth finish to your skin. Ideal for aged skin and patients who’ve suffered from severe acne, if you’ll give me two weeks of your life to recover from this treatment, you can have beautiful results. Yes, you’ll have swollen, red and very inflamed skin, but every client has told me that it has been worth it. The CO2 can be administered under anaesthetic, and is really the only solution for deep lines and skin tightening – it’s the Black & Decker of the facial laser world!

In conclusion, I think that every practitioner and patient has to be able to understand the individual needs of the skin in the bigger picture. For a beautiful canvas, an impressive level of detail and a much better result for the practitioner and the patient, lasers are the ultimate tool for creating everlasting simply youthful skin.
