For years, Botox has been a popular choice for patients at Tracey Bell who want to reverse the signs of ageing. While women have known about the power of Botox to help them to minimize the development of lines and stay looking younger for longer for years, 2015 looks set to be the year when men demand a piece of the Botox action!
At aesthetic clinics like our own all around the world, Botox practitioners are seeing a dramatic upturn in the demand for one of this decade’s most popular anti-ageing secrets.
According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), the number of men undergoing procedures in the UK shot up 17 per cent between 2012 and 2013, with non-surgical face and body treatments now accounting for 75 per cent of the total. This boom is being fueled by a number of factors, from a significant increase in men aged 35-45 becoming single again, to a more general destigmatisation of cosmetic surgery.
In America, where we often see new trends in aesthetics taking off first, the take-up of non-surgical treatments by men is rising even more sharply. It was recently reported in Florida that the number of men getting Botox is skyrocketing and while many of the women who were the trailblazers for this treatment kept schtum about their regular appointments with their Botox practitioner, sometimes keeping it a secret even from their partners and loved ones, the men who are making Botox part of their skincare arsenal aren’t afraid to admit it.
10 News reported: “Dave Green recently got his first series of Botox injections. He is not the kind of man you’d expect to see undergoing a cosmetic procedure. But at 65, the former Buccaneers kicker noticed some changes he didn’t like.
‘You look at the reflection in the window or in a mirror and go, “How did my dad get here,”’ said Green.” Botox (or Brotox as it’s becoming known in the States because of its newfound popularity with men) is a minimally-invasive procedure using the botulinum toxin to freeze or relax facial muscles, making lines and wrinkles look smaller. “I see wrinkles in the forehead,” said Green. “I feel like I’m more tired or look tired. So you just want that alert, awake kind of look. That’s what I’m trying to go for.”
Green is in good company. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, of the nearly 6.5 million Botox procedures done in 2013, men got about six percent. But since 2000, that number has jumped 310%.
At Tracey Bell we’re expecting to see the volume of enquiries about Botox from men continue to increase. Many of our male clients have seen their female friends using Botox to maintain their youthful appearance for years and they’re beginning to ask why they should have to look middle aged when the women they went to school with refuse to.#
If you’re one of the growing number of men who’d like to find out what Botox could do for you, we have highly trained Botox practitioners at all of our clinics who’d be happy to discuss your specific skincare concerns and to discuss your expectations in terms of fighting skin ageing.
And if you’re one of our long-standing female clients, this just goes to show that although Botox has been one of our best-kept beauty secrets for a decade, you really can’t keep a brilliant beauty secret forever! If you spot your male colleagues and friends looking more fresh faced over the coming weeks, we think we may just have blown their big anti-ageing secret. Sorry, guys!
