The Serious Risks of Surgical Weight Loss
If you’ve struggled with your waistline – with your weight – it’s likely that surgery has crossed your mind. Here at Tracey Bell, we believe that weight-loss surgery is a very drastic option. And, it’s very expensive!
Doctors often recommend this type of surgery. And many people feel they have no other option. They feel it’s a last resort to try one of these treatments:
- Liposuction
- Gastric banding
- Abdominal wall re-shaping (abdominoplasty)
- Ballooning
- Stapling
- Gastric bypass surgery
These surgeries have all become widely promoted as a quick solution – and widely accepted by many.
Truth is, these surgical procedures involve serious risks to the patient. They are also very expensive, invasive unpleasant, and not always effective with many people – as they regain more weight after the procedures.
In fact, gastric banding, ballooning and gastric by-pass surgery can cause unpleasant side effects –bloating, nausea, bowel upset and abdominal cramps or abdominal pain. You will be allowed only small amounts of food after these surgeries, and may feel still feel pain afterward.
These extremely limited meals often force people into a state of inadequate nutrition and semi-starvation. At this stage, there is both muscle loss and suppression of the body’s metabolic rate. It’s very serious.
What are your other options?
In our experience, there have never been any totally satisfactory solutions for weight loss. It’s true, we can lose a few pounds with the usual dieting methods. However, this is a slow and difficult struggle – which can take a toll on motivation.
We lose the willpower and stamina to follow a strict weight-loss regime. We have difficulty staying with the diet long enough to achieve a truly healthy weight that brings significant health benefits.
We may take more drastic measures to further reduce our food and calorie intake. But this only forces the body to go into starvation mode – a survival mechanism in which resting metabolic rate (when you’re inactive) slows down. Again, you gain weight when you’re really trying to lose weight.
Does this sound familiar?
More Ugly Facts about Weight Loss Surgery
You don’t hear much about this topic. But you’ve got to consider it if you’re thinking about weight loss surgery.
After losing an extreme amount of weight, what will your body look like? Unfortunately, when the fat melts off your body, the result is not a slim, svelte you.
The reality is, you’ll have thick fat stores under the skin. These are very resistant to the effects of dieting – even when we have lost significant weight. These fat deposits will distort the body shape.
You may feel you need to try losing even more weight, but that has detrimental effects on the face and on slimmer body areas. You will likely need surgery to have these fat deposits removed.
Also, excess skin from significant weight loss will become slack and unattractive. This skin has been stretched by weight gain, and is no longer elastic. Nothing will help this skin regain its normal tightness. Exercise does not help, as the excess skin has no muscles.
After the weight loss surgery, you can end up looking worse than before – and feeling an emotional toll as well. You might believe you looked better before you lost all the weight.
It’s a common response. But it doesn’t have to be your path.
