today, sitting in Ireland reflecting on skin health, wellness and aesthetics, I found myself thinking about one of the most overlooked factors in helping patients maintain beautiful, longer-lasting Botox results — zinc.
Many patients focus only on the treatment itself, but the reality is that your body chemistry, nutrition and skin health all influence how effectively botulinum toxin works and how long results may last.
Zinc plays an important role in the activity of botulinum toxin at the neuromuscular junction. Some studies and clinical observations suggest that patients who are low in zinc may metabolise Botox more quickly or may not achieve the same longevity of effect. While zinc is certainly not a miracle cure, optimising zinc levels can support overall skin healing, immune function and potentially help prolong treatment results.
Systemically, zinc can be obtained through a healthy balanced diet including seafood, red meat, pumpkin seeds, nuts and legumes. In some cases, carefully selected supplementation may be beneficial, particularly for patients who are deficient, have dietary restrictions or increased physiological demands. However, balance is important — excessive zinc supplementation is not advisable and should always be discussed with a healthcare professional.
Topically, zinc also offers excellent skin benefits. Zinc-containing skincare products can help calm inflammation, support barrier repair, reduce redness and assist acne-prone or sensitive skin. Healthy skin tends to respond better to aesthetic treatments overall, and maintaining skin integrity is fundamental to long-term rejuvenation.

There are also several important reminders I always share with my patients to help maintain their Botox results:
• Avoid excessive exercise for the first 24 hours after treatment
• Minimise alcohol intake immediately post-procedure
• Protect your skin from UV damage with daily SPF
• Prioritise sleep, hydration and good nutrition
• Avoid smoking, as this accelerates skin ageing and collagen breakdown
• Maintain regular treatment intervals rather than waiting until movement fully returns
Most importantly, remember that aesthetic medicine should always be approached holistically. Beautiful outcomes are not simply about injections — they are about supporting skin health, wellness, balance and confidence from within.
Education is key, and informed patients always achieve the best long-term results.
